Treatment to try: Ayurvedic Body Massage

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Ayurveda Massage

Ayurveda isn’t just a treatment to relax you; it’s a, holistic way of life. I was invited to experience this for myself at Ayurvedic Pura in London, a relaxing space which includes a spa, cafe and shop. Unlike other massages, the Ayurveda Massage is more focused on stimulating the immune system and strengthening the nervous system than relaxing you in the traditional sense – that’s not to say I wasn’t relaxed, but instead of feeling sleepy and lethargic, I felt balanced and re-energised. I was massaged by ‘long strokes’ rather than pummelling and kneading using warm oil, but it definitely had the same effect on my tension spots which were far less tense afterwards. My skin and body felt great the next day, a sense of being ‘detoxed’ sprang to mind. One of my favourite things about this treatment were the therapists; before the massage even began, I was given a ‘lifestyle consultation’ to help tailor my treatment to my needs and problem areas whilst my massage therapist was knowledgeable and explained the whole ethos of Ayurveda; for me, this is a great alternative to a traditional massage and I’m pretty sure that with regular appointments, you’d see even more results.

Beauty news: New bodycare range BLEND Collective launches

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

BLEND Collective

Does the cool, clean packaging of the new range BLEND Collective signal a new era for natural products? Let’s hope so. Each product is between 99% – 100% natural, made up of a carefully selected blend of essential oils to create the three different product types: Enlivening, an awakening blend of Sicilian Lemon, May Chang Myrtle and Lime; Balancing, a levelling blend of Star Jasmine, Geranium, Vetiver and Rose; and Unwinding, with Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Neroli and Frankinscense. So refreshing to see natural products on the same level, superficially, as their counterparts. Do you like the look of this collection?

Inside the Red Carpet Collection Box – Youngblood Mineral Primer

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Youngblood PrimerThe thing I loved most about the Youngblood Mineral Primer is the feel; when it is first applied, it resembles a clear jelly like substance but once smoothed in, transforms to a soft, silky velvet. My skin felt divine after applying this primer which helped make my pores smaller and my complexion more even; despite not using a Youngblood foundation, it worked amazingly well with my own and it did seem to look a lot more ‘done’ for longer. My skin is quite oily and foundation can sometimes, so it seems, slide off after an hour or two but this primer helped hold on to it as though it would fall overboard. Having tested quite a few primers in my time, it is definitely one of the most lasting. Try it for yourself in our Red Carpet Collection Box, worth over £80.

Inside The Red Carpet Collection Box – Dr Bragi Intensive Treatment Mask

Monday, February 27th, 2012

Described as a “pre-party rejuvenating boost”, I wasn’t expecting too much from the Dr Bragi Intensive Treatment Mask. After all, how great could an at-home product be? Dubbed as a way to bring the Dr Bragi treatment into your home, I thought I’d give it a whirl one evening to see if its promises of plumper, smoother, brighter skin came true. The white cotton-esque mask is a little unnerving if you catch yourself in the mirror (remember the posters from that Antonio Banderas film The Skin I Live In? It’s something along those lines…) but it felt deliciously cooling to the skin. Designed to be left on for 15 minutes, one thing I loved about this treatment was the no fuss or mess element – as much as clay or peel off masks are fun, taking them off isn’t always so enjoyable, especially when you find clumps of it in your hairline a few hours later. And it is now that I should apologise for my lack of faith in the mask. Honestly, after the alloted 15 minutes my skin looked freaking awesome. It had an airbrushed look to it, all soft and dewy (no mean feat with pores the size of mine) and felt velvety to the touch. I hold my hands up – this is one of the best at-home masks I have ever tried and I hate to say it, but it made my skin look just as, if not better, than it did after a facial. This is definitely my new go-to for a big event or night out as it gives your skin that extra polish that it needs.

To the test: Deep Cleansing Facial Scrubs

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Green People Fruit Scrub Exfoliating Stimulating Facial Cream, £9.95, 50ml
What they say: “An effective natural exfoliating face cream for deeply-cleansed, radiant skin”
What you say: Reviewer Katie Tillard said: “The base of the product was really rich and very creamy. As someone who doesn’t exfoliate often, I would have preferred a few more granules within the cream, but overall, I loved it”

Burt’s Bees Citrus Facial Scrub, £10.99, 55g
What they say:
“Uncover smooth, soft skin with this scrub”
What you say:
Reviewer Olivia Lawson said: “The scrub was definitely grainy and felt like there was some exfoliation going on but not so bitty that it felt like half my tan was being ripped off! It was a little bit of a faff to dig a bit of the mixture out of the pot without getting it underneath my fingernails but after washing it off, my skin felt smoother but also hydrated, which I liked, as normally my skin feels tight and dry after washing.”

No7 Total Renewal Micro-Dermabrasion Exfoliator, £11, 75ml
What they say: “Reveal fresher, clearer, younger looking skin within 4 treatments”
What you say:
Reviewer Jen McKenzie of Highschool Hollywood, said: “Firstly, I loved the sleek packaging. I can get quite bad skin when working in London, the dirt from the city air and tube commute really affects it. However, this product cleared the redness up very quickly and after a week of using it every other day, my skin looked glowing! It wasn’t as ‘bitty’ as other exfoliating scrubs I have used, primarily it appeared quite smooth but the more you work it into your skin the more you can feel it working. I loved that it also made my hands really soft from rubbing it onto my face!”

Beauty news: Oscar inspired nail varnish

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Everyone and their dog seems to be going Oscar cray cray (us included – see our Red Carpet Collection Box information here) and none more so than American beauty brand Julep, who has created a range of Best Actress nominee inspired nail colours.

The leading lady shades include Glenn (Close), a berry red shimmer;  Viola (Davis), a deep purple; Elizabeth (Olsen), a midnight blue; and Rachel (Weisz), a gold copper tone plus one very special shade named after the Oscar award itself in gold glitter, of course. So even though the main honour can only go to one of these deserving ladies, having a nail varnish named after you isn’t such a bad consolation prize! Although not stocked in the UK, we think it’s a mega cool idea.

I may not be up for an Oscar (this year), but the ‘Carla’ polish would be a glossy, grey-pink putty tone – what would yours be?
