With the UK’s first ever natural make-up range under their belts, Essential Care is an ever-growing organic and natural skincare brand who pride themselves on making the purest skincare on earth. We caught up with the brand’s Abi to discover more…
What is the ethos behind Essential Care?
Essential Care is on a mission to create the purest skincare on earth. But at the same time, we aim to create products that are a joy to use and are effective. We avoid artificial preservatives or fragrances, petrochemicals, sulphates or any other potentially unhealthy ingredients. Instead we use only the highest quality organic herbs and essential oils in therapeutic concentrations for optimum benefit. We source only virgin cold-pressed oils that have their full antioxidant vitamin-content intact to actively nourish the skin and protect it from premature ageing. And we have an active commitment to the care of the environment which includes supporting organic farming methods, choosing raw materials which are locally-sourced where possible, fairly traded otherwise, and are from sustainable and renewable resources. For example, many of our jars and bottles are made in the UK from 100% recycled materials.
What spurred you on to create the brand?
My mother, Margaret – a herbalist and aromatherapist – began making natural skincare over 25 years ago as a remedy for her allergy-prone skin and my eczema. I grew up with her making various lotions and potions. Then about 10 years ago when I was working in America, my skin got in a bad state and the only thing that helped was my mother’s products. They were just so good I thought that they deserved to be brought to a wider audience. Nothing was on the market at the time that was as natural. So in 2003, Essential Care was launched as one of the UK’s first ever certified organic brands.
Who do you see as the typical Essential Care customer?
We have a very diverse customer base. Originally we began as a brand for people with allergy-prone skin, but a recent survey showed that actually only half of our customers have sensitive skin and the rest buy Essential Care because they trust our environmental ethics and or just enjoy the products because they work.
How difficult was it to create the UK’s first organic and natural make-up range?
It was 3 years of hard work. Using mineral colours is the relatively easier bit, but creating makeup without any artificial ingredients (silicones, petroleum oils, synthetic preservatives) or even potentially problematic things like talc, is really difficult. It’s harder than making a natural moisturiser because you need to ensure good colour payoff and lasting performance. In addition we gave ourselves the challenge of using the most eco-friendly packaging ever. It was so hard to find good quality non-petrochemical packaging that wasn’t made in the Far East. But we did it – our lipsticks and eyeshadow applicators for example are made from vegetable plastic. And the makeup itself gets great feedback and has won awards.
Do you see more cosmetics company going down the organic and natural route?
It’s a growth market and there is a certain amount of jumping on the bandwagon. My hope is that companies have their whole products certified as organic (at the moment this is voluntary rather than compulsory) so that consumers are not duped by green-washing. – Very often one or two organic or natural ingredients are put in an otherwise synthetic product to pass the whole product off as organic. Consumers should always look for a proper certification mark like the Soil Association’s to be sure.
And what extra benefits do organic products have over their less pure contemporaries?
Genuine (certified) organic skincare and makeup bring real skin benefits. Essential Care for example uses virgin plant oils like olive and coconut that both moisturise the skin and replenish it with antioxidant vitamins. This is so much more beneficial than a ‘dead’ mineral oil or petroleum-based cream which offers no nutritional value to the skin. Organic products also use ingredients that are most akin to the human body – the body is most likely to react to a synthetic chemical that it can’t recognise. More and more scientific studies are showing the problems associated with synthetic cosmetic ingredients – like the paraben preservatives.
Which product are you most proud of and why?
I’d have to pick two! Our Gentle Herb Shampoo is amazing – it was the UK’s first ever organically certified shampoo (in 2004) and still is about the purest shampoo I’ve ever seen (and it makes your hair look and feel amazing!). I remember my mother trying to formulate it many years ago for a friend with psoriasis – it took a long time; she used to grate bars of olive oil soap and mix them with a stew of herbs from the garden. Then there’s our Organic Repair Lotion which has helped so many people overcome skin problems like eczema. When customers send in such good testimonials about it, it gives such a good sense of purpose to what we do.
Which is your favourite product and why?
Again I have two! I love our new black eyeliner, made with Fairtrade certified shea butter, which just feels wonderful and performs as well as any conventional eye pencil. Also our Rose Moisturiser which gives instant radiance, but its powerpack of 3 organic rose extracts is also very uplifting.
What’s next for Essential Care?
2012 will be an exciting year. We’re about to launch a new look for our body-washes and best-selling shampoo, but this year’s biggest project is to build our new super eco-friendly HQ. We’re trying to find land at the moment and get some drawings done. The aim is for the building is to be ‘zero carbon’, so it will create its own energy, recycle all water and be built from sustainable (re-used, recycled and local) materials. It’ll also have its own herb garden. I’d like it to be a great venue where we can promote sustainable architecture and organic living to schools, companies and other groups, as well as being the place where Essential Care’s products are made.

Organic beauty fans on the lookout for new brands will be pleased to discover the latest addition to the market, DP London. An upmarket new organics brand, they work with a UK-based artisan bio lipid company with over 50 years of experience in the field of specialist botanical oils, who produce world class skincare solutions all grown and formulated in the UK. Okay, enough of the science bit – what does all this mean? They’re an environmentally friendly, organic brand who have created a handful of lovely, well -researched products. And to give the brand extra kudos, Pearl Lowe’s even designed a candle for them.
I tried their Firming and Smoothing Body Cream, which is a very indulgent, thick cream ideal for the colder months when tight-clad legs get dry and neglected and hot baths are the order of the day. You apply the cream after a bath or shower for maximum effect and then let it sink in for super-moisturised, plumped up skin.
My verdict? I love organic body products and this one is gorgeous – subtly scented with that unmistakable gently soothing organic smell. I could feel the rich oils getting to work straight away leaving a gorgeous sheen on my skin that lasted for hours. It’s ideal for dry skins as it’s so rich. Keep an eye out for DP London to appear on Latest in Beauty.

If you suffer from dry, frazzled or damaged hair (and let’s face it, most of us do), look no further than Aveda’s Damage Remedy Haircare Kit, a range of products which help repair and moisturise damaged hair, smoothing the hair cuticle and instantly repairing damage.
With my long, curly and consequently often dry hair, I was excited to try this product which has a great reputation amongst beauty insiders for doing exactly as it says on the bottle.
I’m pleased to report that after using the shampoo and conditioner, which have that lovely plant extract-infused Aveda scent, my hair was squeaky clean and super soft. Once I’d combed through my hair, which was definitely less tangled than usual straight away, I added a healthy squeeze of Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair, a lovely-smelling leave-in conditioner which helps protect against heat drying and chemical processing. I loved the texture of it, which was silky and moisturising, and the result, which meant my curls were defined and swingy.
My hair was left soft and shiny with an improved texture – which is no easy feat, believe me – so this is a product I would definitely try again.
If you fancy giving your hair a little TLC, the mini Aveda Damage Remedy Haircare Kit is available as luxury samples through Latest in Beauty – visit www.latestinbeauty.com to add to your basket. Plus, you’ll receive an invitation to a London-based Aveda counter* where you’ll receive a free Aveda Comforting tea whilst being pampered with a stress-relieving hand massage and an expert hair consultation.
*The Aveda invitation is valid in Harrods, House of Fraser Oxford Street, House of Fraser City, House of Fraser Westfield, Liberty and Peter Jones Sloane Square.

Any lip balm addicts out there? Me too! So you can guess how happy I get when a lovely new lip product lands on my desk. This time, it was Balance Me‘s Hydrating Rose Otto & Shea Butter Salve, an all-purpose balm for lips or dry skin.
A totally organic-certified company, Balance Me are passionate about aromatherapy and natural products and aim to make theirs both affordable and luxurious at the same time. The Hydrating Rose Otto and Shea Butter Salve is a deeply nourishing balm, with the key ingredients Rose Otto and Palma Rosa giving skin a huge hit of moisture-boosting ingredients.
I really enjoyed using this balm. It’s a little bit runny thanks to the high presence of oils, so you need to ease up on the squeeze, but the product itself on lips is super-glossy with a high sheen, with a lovely naturally sweet aromatherapy scent and extremely nourishing feel. With the essential fatty acids and vitamins in Sweet Almond Oil and the unrefined Beeswax, skin is instantly moisturised and soothed. I also found this great for dry patches, rubbing onto dry skin on my feet overnight and even used it as a highlighter down the front of my leg – this insider trick reflects the light making legs look longer and leaner.
Conveniently packaged in a 15ml tube with slanted applicator, the salve fits into a pocket or handbag for use on the go and is worth a whopping £8 – but you can now get it when you order your CEW Beauty Insiders Choice Winners Box at http://www.latestinbeauty.com/sub

An exciting treat for organic and natural beauty fans – Latest in Beauty now have luxury samples of the delicious Bamford Body products, including geranium, lavender and peppermint-scented body wash, bath oil and body lotion.
I am a huge fan of organic products and Bamford is a new brand for me – it’s a quality brand stocked in upmarket shops such as Liberty and the Conran Shop. The great thing about products, aside from the fact that they are at least 95% organic and made in England is that they are unisex, meaning your partner can use them too.
I was only too happy to try the luxury samples, which are a great size for a week’s holiday or a romantic weekend away for two. The bath oil was lovely and created a milky, beautifully scented bathing experience, while the body wash foamed really well (particularly for an organic product), creating a thick lather and leaving a lovely scent on the skin which lasted all day. The body lotion is definitely more of a lotion than a cream so sinks in quickly, leaving skin wonderfully scented and smelling of lavender – one of my all-time favourite scents, particularly for bathing products. All in all this really feels like a luxury brand and is bound to go down well with aromatherapy fans, whether for a gift or for a treat.
You can try these lovely Bamford products, which offer great value for money at just £5 (products are worth over £12), at Latest in Beauty by going to www.latestinbeauty.com/lxs and adding them to your basket. Enjoy and let us know what you think!

If you have older or drier skin that could do with some pepping up, now is the time to get onto the main Latest in Beauty site and order your skincare samples!
We’ve just added two products from Lavera’s beautiful Faces Organic Wild Rose skincare range, which is designed specifically to target wrinkes and pamper older skin. You can try either the Moisturising Cream, which is deliciously rich and smells absolutely amazing, or the matching Eye Gel.
With both options, you’ll get a generous four sachets (which contain about two applications each) so you’ll have plenty of time to see how the product works on your skin and decide if it’s right for you.
I’ve tried both products and am absolutely obsessed with the sweet rose fragrance. The moisturiser smells a bit like jammie dodgers or jelly sweets, but with a sophisticated twist! It’s beautiful worn under liquid foundation to help keep skin soft and hydrated, or used when skin is feeling a bit parched after a big night out. Though created for older skins, I think these products would be a lovely treat for anyone who suffers from dryness, but they’ll also help tackle wrinkles too.
The products are available now – just login or register on our site. If your skin is oilier, perhaps give these a miss and try our Murad samples instead.

Those Lushies can always be relied upon to take the stress out of shopping for gifts. Not only do they have great year-round gift boxes, but they pull out all the stops for occasions like Easter, Valentine’s Day and Mothers Day (which is next weekend, arrrrgh)!
This year they’ve turned three of their famous bath ballistics – Avobath, Space Girl and Vanilla Fountaion – into limited edition flower shapes. They’re available individually for £3.60, but if you really want to impress mum, you can get all three and wrapped up in a vase made from a bumper-sized ballistic in the much-loved former B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful scent Keep it Fluffy.
The ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ ballistics set is £18.50 at Lush stores or online.

QVC is currently offering free postage and packing on selected Liz Earle products, which is great news as it’s always the hefty p&p charges that put me off ordering from them.
The 3 Piece Everyday Beauty Necessities kit is definitely the star buy, particularly if you’re new to the brand. It features a whopping great 200ml tube of the hero product from the Liz Earle range, Cleanse & Polish hot cloth cleanser (with muslin cloths) along with 200ml tubes of Botanical Shine Shampoo and Conditioner. Haircare is a relatively new addition to the range but the Botanical Shine products are already a hit with die-hard fans and newcomers alike. Cleanse & Polish is a beauty classic – a rich, creamy cleanser you massage into the skin and wash off with a hot, damp muslin cloth. If you’ve never tried it, I’d highly recommend it. It’s one of the products I return to again and again as it really does keep skin clean, soft and looking it’s best!

I love natural-based beauty products and the ethos behind them. But at the same time, with the exception of my devotion to Lush, I find the hippy-ish reputation of natural and organic products, and the often cheap-looking packaging a bit of a turn-off.
There are no such problems with Bamford, whose sophisticated, sleek and minimalist packaging has more in common with high-end beauty buys than hemp soap and bath bombs. Indeed the aim of the brand is to bridge the gap between natural and luxury, bringing you the benefits of aromatherapy-based beauty products without all the corrugated cardboard and patchouli (ok, there’s a bit of patchouli).
I’ve been trying the Rose Body Lotion, and have to admit I was expecting a middle-of-the-road product with a strong rosy scent. How wrong I was! The rose in this product is mixed with lemon and chamomile and the result is absolutely beautiful. It’s fresh and sweet without being synthentic in any way, and it’s rich and sexy without being overpowering. I would never dream of putting rose and lemon together myself, but it really works in this combination.
The lotion itself is quite light, and soaks in very quickly. The main moisturising ingredients are jojoba, almond and shea butter, but it doesn’t have the oiliness of some heavier natural products. I found four or five pumps was enough for each leg, and this did a really good job of sorting out the dry skin I get on my shins in Winter. The scent lingers for a while, but not so long that it becomes cloying and overpowering. All in all, I’m impressed and this is now up there with the gorgeous John Masters organics products in my ‘natural beauty for snobs’ toplist!

I’m a slave to mineral powder foundation, which provides really good weightless coverage without clogging up the pores. But sometimes, the finish from a powder can be a bit flat and chalky, especially if there are dry areas on the skin, and I know many people prefer the finish (and easier application technique) of a liquid foundation.
The good news is liquid mineral foundations are now much easier to get hold of, and are a good introduction to mineral makeup if you struggle with kabuki brushes and the buffing technique. I recently tried Inika’s liquid foundation (£25.24), which combines mineral pigments with green tea extract, rosehip and hemp seed. It’s particularly good for older or dry skin, as it’s part foundation, part moisturiser and has a much softer, dewier look than mineral powder.
I applied the foundation sparingly with a brush, topped with a touch of translucent powder and some MAC mineralise skinfinish, and the result was gorgeous. I was worried it’d be too thick and heavy, but it’s quite lightweight, which is nice as other mineral liquids I’ve tried have been very thick and highly pigmented and looked caked-on after application. This won’t be so great if you’re trying to cover serious redness, spots or dark circles, but if you just want natural coverage it’s lovely. You can definitely tell thought has been put into the formula – even five hours after applying it, my skin still felt velvet-soft and looked as naturally flawless as I’m ever likely to get with a liquid foundation. I don’t like to look like I’m wearing loads of makeup, and this is perfect for that!
