With thousands of new products hitting the market every month, it’s easy to get blase about just how good or useful all these lotions and potions may be. But BIOEffect EGF Serum has caught the attention of even the most wizened old beauty bods.
The serum is essentially a fix-all skincare product that contains EGF (epidermal growth factor), a substance that exists naturally in our skin and is responsible for cell regeneration. By using the product, the idea is that you are encouraging new growth and skin regeneration for softer, smoother, younger-looking skin.
EGF is not a new ingredient, but where BIOEffect differs from rivals is in the production method. Rather than using animal cells to cultivate the ingredient, the Icelandic scientists behind this product have worked out a more ethical way, using the barley plant. The aim in the future is to use this method to grow more EGFs for treating diseases and so on; the serum was created almost by accident whilst working on other uses for the research.
Obviously, this level of scientic research and development doesn’t come cheap, so you won’t be surprised to hear a vial of the serum comes in at £125 (though it’s currently on offer for £95). Yes, it’s expensive. Very, very expensive. In fact, it’s the kind of expensive that makes me roll my eyes in despair at anyone even considering buying such a tiny little tube of liquid.
Which makes it even harder for me to tell you that I’ve tried it, and I thought it was really, really good. I wish I could say that it’s all a big con and that it made absolutely no difference to my skin. But the truth is, it does seem to do something a little bit magical. After using this for two weeks, for the first time in my entire life, someone commented on how great my skin looked.
I only use the serum once a day. You can use it morning and night, but given how expensive it is, I want to make it last, so I use my regular moisturiser during the day, and then apply two tiny drops of this at night after cleansing. And that’s it. No fussy regime or extra products. It works best when used alone, as the oils in other products can stop it from working correctly, so there’s no need for night cream or facial oil or anything else.
When you apply it, I will admit it doesn’t feel particularly luxurious. It creates an almost film-like coating over the skin and I found my face felt sticky for 10 – 15 mins after application. But I think it’s worth it for the results. There’s no immediate ‘wow’ factor, but after a few days, I could just see my skin looked more radiant, and I barely needed my concealer any more. My skin can be quite combination – most noticeably I have an oilslick forehead but flaky, dry skin under the eyes – especially in cold weather. Since I started using this, the dryness has gone completely, the oiliness has at least calmed down, and I’ve not had a single spot or flake of skin. Other reviewers have raved about the effect it has on wrinkles and older skin, but I can’t vouch for that as I’m in my 20s.
I really do think this is one of the rare ‘miracle’ products that seems to live up to a lot of its claims, but I still advise caution when deciding if it’s right for you. If you’re used to using cosmetics that cost you under a fiver, and you’re usually quite happy with the results you get, you’ll probably find that if you splurge on this you’ll think it’s good, but just not good enough to justify why you’ll be living on baked beans for the next three months.
But, if you use mid range or expensive products anyway, or if you’ve never found the right product and would do anything for an easy skincare regime that delivers results, I’d definitely suggest you consider trying this in the future. The ease of application, the fact you need no other products…these are all good bonuses.
And if you’re still unsure, look at the price in terms of cost per use compared to your current regime. At the rate I’m using it, the serum would cost me approximately £1.39 per day. The daily cost of all the products I no longer need when using this is £1.13 (that’s night cream, serum, facial oil) so really the BioEffect EGF serum only costs 26p a day more than what I was using already.
I’ll keep you updated with how I feel about this once I’ve used the whole bottle, but it’s safe to say that a third of the way through, I’m impressed.
