There’s no denying the fact that I’m a massive skincare junkie (Jem – Blog Editor – Hi!); there’s nothing I enjoy more than testing out new skincare trends and products that promise to give me nothing short of a glowy, clear complexion. Typically, I’m also a devoted advocate of facials and have an expansive skincare routine for both the morning and evening – actually, I honestly think my skincare cabinet could rival that of my local Boots. The latest skincare technique that I’ve been eager to try, in hope of changing the look of my skin, is micro-needling. In short, micro-needling is a non-invasive treatment that promises younger looking skin. That’s enough for me to say yes, but what does the treatment involve, and – most importantly – does it really work?

THE INS-AND-OUTS OF MICRO-NEEDLING

To give a little context, micro-needling is a procedure that uses a number of tiny needles to puncture the first layer of your skin (sounds much scarier than it is). Micro-needling has two main benefits: it stimulates epidermal growth factors to boost collagen and elastin that plump and firm the skin, and increases absorption of active ingredients by greater than 90%, making this procedure one of the most powerful and effective ways to stop early signs of ageing while preventing new fine lines and wrinkles occurring. Although available in clinics nationwide, micro-needling can be achieved at-home with the use of a dermaroller as an added step in your skincare regime. With the right corrective serums, the mirco-needling technique brightens your skin (even after first use, from experience), ensuring you’re left with nothing but a dewy, youthful glow that you simply can’t get from other products or at-home treatments.

Micro-needling works best with serums that have active ingredients, one of my favourites being hyaluronic acid. These types of ingredients will maximise the effects of the micro-needling technique to stimulate collagen, speed up cell turnover, lift hyper-pigmentation, smooth out fine lines, firm, plump and hydrate. Generally speaking, if you’re a beginner or micro-needling novice, using a .3mm needle is advised, being both pain free and highly effective. The StackedSkincare Collagen Boosting Micro-Roller (featured in our latest Byrdie Beauty Box) is perfect for an effective at-home treatment that provides instant results with no downtime. For optimised results, you can also combine micro-needling with a light peel prior to derma rolling once a week. The benefit to this is even greater exfoliation and uptake of nutrients. It’s good to note that if you want to use larger needle sizes, it’s recommended that you see a professional.

TOP TIPS FOR GETTING STARTED

  • Make sure you always purchase your device from a reputable source or medical office, like StackedSkincare.
  • For optimal results, use the device 3-5 times a week, or everyday depending on preference.
  • Replace your micro-needle every month for optimal results as the needles will naturally become dull and significantly less effective
  • Never micro-needle over acne or open sores due to the risk of spreading bacteria around your face
  • Only mirco-needle over the same are 2-3 times in one session
  • Always apply your serum both before and after
  • Sterilise the roller after each use in 91% alcohol and allow to air dry before storing in its container.
