Nothing symbolises British Summer quite like a traditional picnic – apart from the unpredictable weather, of course. From prepping delectable treats, to choosing a picturesque location and stylish picnic blanket (yes, that is important) we’re sharing our top tips and tricks for organising a picture-perfect picnic ahead of National Picnic Week (15-24 June). There’s just something about alfresco dining that makes food taste 100% better than usual, and because of that, we cannot contain our excitement. In fact, we can almost smell taste the scones….

ACING YOUR SPOT

Obviously, you’re going to want to find somewhere scenic, but we’d also suggest finding a spot near a tree if you’re venturing outside on a particularly warm day (contrary to popular belief, it can happen in the UK) Your actual spot should also be flat and dry so you can spread out your blanket, food and drinks with ease. Don’t have a traditional picnic blanket? Don’t fret, any large piece of fabric will suffice.

THE FOOD

A picnic wouldn’t be quintessentially British without the usual contenders; scones with clotted cream and jam, cucumber and cream cheese finger sandwiches and a traditional quiche (no soggy bottom here, ladies) It’s also worth carrying the necessities; paper plates, bowls and cutlery because a picnic without them can be a messy affair. You’re also going to want to keep food tasty until you’re ready to tuck in, so insulated flasks and cool bags are a must. It’s also worth thinking about the practicalities – don’t bring too many chocolatey things unless in a cool bag. The same applies to ice cream, or you may have a melted Mr Whippy on your hands, and nobody wants that…

A CHEEKY TIPPLE

Pink gin or the classic Pimms are always winners in our books. As a matter of convenience, bring your beverages in pre-poured cans that you can throw away after. If bringing bottles, don’t forget the bottle opener (we don’t want you to break your teeth…)

THE FINAL TOUCHES

If you’re really wanting to up your picnic game, you’re going to want to go all out on the accessories (even practical ones like napkins). And most importantly? (apart from the Summer tunes on the wireless speaker, obviously) SPF. Make sure you’re protected all day long to avoid ruining your picnic by having to leave an unsightly shade of pink.
