We take beauty sleep very seriously in the LiB office, which is why we’re delighted to have partnered with BALANCE to launch The Night-Time Edit – the ultimate pre-bed ritual. Sleep is an essential piece of housekeeping when it comes to keeping the mind, body and soul harmoniously happy. A good night’s rest provides the opportunity to process information, consolidate your memories and clear toxins from the brain. If you fall victim to a routine that hinders your sleep pattern, or struggle to drift off – or stay asleep – BALANCE’s Editor, Sophie, and our Editor, Jem, are sharing their top tips for getting a good night’s sleep. Let’s face it: waking up with a spring in your step starts the night before…

The Night-Time Edit in its entirety provides the perfect pre-slumber ritual to help you relax, drift off, and more importantly, stay asleep for as long as your body needs. Here are some of our favourites and why they’re essential for a good night’s sleep.

BALANCE-FEATURE2a

JURLIQUE LIMITED EDITION FRAGRANT ROSE HAND CREAM

JURLIQUE-ROSE-HAND-CREAMSophie says: Bringing yourself into a relaxed, winding-down state that feels luxurious and sacred is key to a better night’s sleep. Put this gorgeous Limited Edition Hand Cream on before bed and, better still, pop gloves on top to deliver intense hydration to hands over-night.

Jem says: I like to give myself a hand massage before bed using this hand cream; it smells divine and leaves my skin soft and supple. If you can find someone else to do it for you, even better!

NEAL’S YARD REMEDIES WILD ROSE BEAUTY BALM

NEALS-YARD-WILD-ROSE-BLAMSophie says: This travel-size balm is a beauty must-have! Highly versatile, use it as a cleanser, moisturiser or leave-on overnight as an intensive treatment. With antioxidant-rich, organic wild rosehip oil, provitamin A (a source of beta-Carotene) and vitamin E, this pot of organic goodness will do wonders for your skin.

Jem says: I personally like to use this luxe balm as a cleanser as it melts away my makeup in an instant. The rich scent transports me back to the Neal’s Yard Remedies tranquil treatment rooms where I’ve previously been for a relaxing afternoon. This is just what’s needed before bed.

SPACEMASKS SELF-HEATING EYE MASK

SPACE-MASK-HEATED-EYE-MASKSophie says: Stressful day at work? Headache from staring at a screen all day? This award-winning mask designed to help tired eyes, heats up within minutes. Believe me, your head and eyes will thank you when you’re ready to doze off.

Jem says: Unfortunately, I’m a regular sufferer of eye strain (or what we used to call ‘square eyes’ back in the ‘00s). This makes Spacemasks one of my essential products when getting a good night’s sleep. It calms the mind and relieves eye pressure ready to unwind for bed.

DR BOTANICALS POMEGRANATE SUPERFOOD REGENERATING SLEEPING MASK

DR-BOTANICLS-POMEGRANTE-SLEEP-MASKSophie says: Wake up with visibly glowing skin after sleeping with this anti-oxidant rich, vegan mask. Light in texture, this plumps skin overnight.

Jem says: It’s become my Sunday night ritual to indulge in an overnight mask. The glowy results come morning can’t be beaten!

GLOV MAKEUP REMOVER ECO

GLOV-MAKEUP-REMOVERSophie says: A zero-waste solution to washing your face. Just add water to remove makeup and thoroughly clean your skin. Plus you’ll get to bed even quicker!

Jem says: On those nights where I am too tired to even think about my skincare regime (it happens to the best of us) Glov is my saviour. You just add water to the mitt and voila, your face is sufficiently clean and your rid of the guilt you would have felt sleeping in a full face of makeup. Result!

Jem caught up with Sophie to talk all things sleep. What are her secrets?

Q
What's your top tip for winding down after a stressful day?
A
No technology after 8pm. A hot bath or shower with essential oils, followed by reading a great novel in bed by candlelight.
Q
If there was one product to add to your night-time routine, what would it be?
A
I believe in a wholistic approach to most things and not relying on one thing. Having said that, This Works Sleep Plus Pillow Spray makes a massive difference to my ability to get to sleep.
Q
Does what you eat or drink affect your dreams?
A
Apparently so. Almonds contain the sleep-friendly hormone melatonin, as well as tryptophan, that all-important precursor to the serotonin which makes our dreams vivid and exciting. Plus potassium-packed bananas are renowned for helping you dream.
Q
Can you bust one sleeping myth?
A
Coffee isn’t always bad for sleep! A quick ‘coffee nap’ is a great way to boost energy. Drink a coffee then have a 20-minute siesta straightaway before the caffeine kicks in. When you wake up you’ll feel refreshed. But do this no later than 3pm.
Q
What's the best sleeping position? What's yours?
A
I tend to sleep on my side and am very mindful that my neck is fully supported and head is in a neutral position, as I’ve struggled a lot with neck pain over the years. Investing in a quality mattress and pillow is essential.
Q
What's your top tip for when you can't sleep?
A
When I can’t sleep, I tune into a guided meditation on my Calm app. The Seven Days of Sleep programme is life-changing. It teaches you ways to relax the body, connect with the breath and think like a good sleeper.
