Bottled bargains? M&S take high-end perfumes as ‘inspiration’
Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Creating budget alternatives to high-end perfumes is no new idea. We’ve all seen those market stalls flogging DKMY, Channel No.5, OKOne or whatever else for £6 a bottle, and we all know the liquid inside is more likely to smell like loo cleaner than the perfume it’s been ‘inspired’ by.

But who knew that good old M&S was getting in on the act too? This time, it’s not so much about the scent itself, but the packaging. Someone in product design is clearly having a field day ‘designing’ these bottles…

Cheeky, isn’t it? None of the bottles are identical, so they’re not really doing anything wrong, but no perfume fan could miss the obvious inspirations – just look at those butterflies, tacked on in the exact same way as Marc Jacobs’ daisies!

Scent-wise, there’d have to be a sniff-test to compare properly, but I don’t think these are direct homages in that area. Take Marks and Spencer’s ‘Simply Divine‘. It’s described thus: “elegant fusion of tuberose and jasmine top notes are combined with sweet plum and mandarin and given a warm depth with amber and musk.” Very Hollywood Michael Kors, its big sis, meanwhile “makes its debut with shimmering jewels of mandarin and iced bergamot. Scene-stealing gardenia follows suit with a decadent performance of award-worthy glamour.” So they share the mandarin, but little else.

Have you tried any of the M&S fragrances and found them to be similar to their inspirations? Let us know!
