Winter is a rough time for hair, so January is a great time of year to start giving your locks some much-needed TLC. If you’re always frying your hair with heated styling tools, or you just put it up in a rough elastic everyday, then why not make it your beauty resolution to show your mane some love this year? Here’s how…

Try not to wash your hair every day

There’s a lot of discussion in the beauty industry about how often is the ‘right’ amount to wash your hair, but most people agree that once a day can be drying to hair. If you have fine locks that get greasy quickly, or you just feel the need to wash your hair every day, try to stick to a mild shampoo. Otherwise, keep your hair-washing to every other day, and use dry shampoo if you need a little ‘oomph’ on your in-between days.

Turn the heat down

Tresemme-spray

This applies to any heated styling tools you use, but also the water in your shower! Very hot showers can be damaging to your hair, skin AND nails, so lower the temperature by a few degrees to get a healthier bod all round. When using your hairdryer, straighteners or curling tongs, don’t put it on the hottest setting unless you’re absolutely sure your hair can take it – and even then, keep drying time to a minimum, and use a heat protectant spray. We like TRESemme Protect Heat Defence Styling Spray.

Get regular trims

Depending on the condition of your hair, trims every six to eight weeks is a good way to keep it looking sleek and glossy. Trims won’t (despite popular mythology) cause your hair to grow faster, but they will prevent split ends, which can cause your hair to break easily. In between trims, use a hair-friendly elastic like Invisibobble to avoid breakage.

Use a deep treatment mask weekly

If you don’t already use a deep conditioning treatment, then the January sales are the perfect time to pick one up! Choose one that suits your hair type and schedule in a hair-pampering day once a week to replenish moisture. We love Macadamia Oil Deep Repair Masque and Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask.

Tweak your diet

To get truly healthy hair, load your plate up with all the essential oils and vitamins it needs. Fatty acids are crucial; you can find omega-3 in fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, and omega-9 in avocado. Other hair-helpers include nuts (walnuts are the best), oats and eggs, as well as vegetables such as bell peppers, spinach and tomatoes.
